How to Find Ancient Debris and Netherite in Minecraft | Ancient Debris Farming Guide

Forming the strongest element in Minecraft.

Ancient Debris was added to Minecraft in the 1.16 update. Its primary purpose is that it is a necessary resource you'll need if you want to obtain Netherite! It seems to be a scarce resource in the Minecraft world—which is perhaps what makes it so valuable, despite only having one use. Luckily, there are a few methods you can use to find and collect them faster.

How to Find Ancient Debris

Ancient Debris can only currently be found in the Nether, so you will need to create a Nether Portal. Once you've reached the Nether, you'll want to use the following tips to have the best chance of finding it.

If you want to Mine for Ancient Debris, be sure to bring a Diamond or Netherrite pickaxe. You cannot mine it with anything less than Diamond.

Ancient Debris attempts to generate in blobs (veins) of one to four between Y 8 and Y 22 in each chunk. A second blob of zero to two Ancient Debris attempts to generate from levels Y 8 to Y119.

This means it is possible to find it anywhere between Y 8 and Y 119, but you'll find it most often under Y 22. Ancient Debris generates most often on Y 15. Because of this, the best option for obtaining Ancient Debris as quickly as possible is to begin a strip mine at Y 14, and to dig one 1 * 2 hole as far as you can.

Ancient Debris can also generate in chests that are found in the Bastion Remnants, one of the naturally generated structures in the Nether. The list below outlines the chance a Bastion Remnant chest has to spawn Ancient Debris and how many.

Chest TypeQuantityChance
Generic Chest113.5%
Treasure Chest212.7%
Hoglin Stable ChestBedrock: 1
Java: 2

That's everything there is to know about Ancient Debris and how to find it!

  1. Wattles made the wither vid as a joke

  2. What you describe is “Mining”, not “Farming”. Farming, in my opinion, can only be applied to a renewable resource. Ancient Debris is not renewable. Discuss?

    1. Farming, in gaming, generally means to collect a lot of something. I don’t think the fact that it is renewable is always a deciding factor, but I could be wrong. It’s just semantics at the end of the day, which I’m not overly concerned about.

  3. I found ancient debris at y level 108 so i guess higher you are more rare?

    1. That seems pretty rare!

  4. Would also like to add it spawns most commonly in Y layer 13 and I recommend mining the Y13 layer of chunks. To me, seems like a very suitable strategy. At Y levels 12 to 22 it spawns in veins of 1 to 5, so you have a better chance mining low in the nether.

  5. I found one out in the open at y 51. just letting you know. it was beautiful with a mushroom on it :3
